Cynosure Elite iQ common faults: what fails and how it's diagnosed

Energy drop, calibration failures, and cooling alarms are the three fault families that dominate Elite iQ service calls. Here's how a technician tells them apart.

The Elite iQ is a workhorse in Southern California medspas, and like any dual-wavelength platform running a heavy schedule, its failures cluster into a few predictable patterns: energy drop, calibration failure, and cooling-system alarms. Knowing the pattern before a technician arrives shortens the visit and keeps the repair proportional to the actual fault.

Energy drop on the Alexandrite or Nd:YAG module

Providers usually notice this clinically first: treatments requiring more passes to reach the same endpoint, or the system reporting delivered energy below the requested setting. The usual causes are flashlamp aging, cooling that isn't holding the module inside its working temperature window, or contamination on optical components in the delivery path. A technician measures actual output against specification rather than assuming the flashlamp is the culprit — flashlamps are the most commonly over-replaced part on this platform.

Calibration failures at startup

A calibration failure during warm-up is a symptom, not a root cause. It can point to a power-supply charging fault that can't reach target voltage fast enough, a sensor reading outside its expected range, or a flashlamp that has aged past the point where it can meet the calibration target at all. Where in the warm-up sequence the failure occurs, and whether it's repeatable, both help isolate the subsystem.

Water-cooling and flow-sensor alarms

Cooling alarms are the fault most often mistaken for chiller failure. In practice, contaminated coolant, a clogged filter, or a failing flow sensor produce the same alarm as an actual chiller fault. Verifying flow rate and temperature differential through the loop — rather than swapping the chiller outright — resolves the majority of these calls at a fraction of the cost.

Power supply and capacitor charging errors

Slow charge times, intermittent shutdowns mid-treatment, or charging faults that only appear under sustained use point to the power supply and its capacitor bank. These faults tend to worsen gradually, so an intermittent charging error today is worth addressing before it becomes a mid-treatment shutdown.

Handpiece and articulated-arm issues

On systems that use an articulated delivery arm, alignment drift and joint wear show up as inconsistent spot quality or output that varies with arm position. This is a mechanical delivery issue, distinct from — and usually cheaper to fix than — a laser-source fault, but only if the diagnosis correctly separates the two.

What to log before calling for service

  • The exact alarm text or code, and the point in the treatment or warm-up cycle when it appeared.
  • Whether the fault is consistent or intermittent.
  • The module (Alexandrite or Nd:YAG) and settings in use.
  • Recent coolant service history, if any.
