What preventive maintenance actually is
Preventive maintenance is not "turn it on and see if it works." It's a structured pass through the parts of the laser that wear, drift, or degrade with use — before those changes become failures. A good PM visit combines mechanical inspection, cooling-system checks, output verification, and documentation the practice can keep on file.
What a real PM visit covers
- External inspection. Chassis, handpieces, fibers, connectors, foot switch, interlocks, casters, cables. Damage or wear here shows up as intermittent faults later.
- Cooling system. Coolant condition, filter condition, flow at load, temperature stability, reservoir level, and inspection for leaks or biofilm. Cooling is the single most common source of avoidable failures we see.
- Optical path. Where accessible, inspect and clean output couplers, delivery-system optics, and beam paths. Contamination and misalignment reduce output long before an error code triggers.
- Electrical. Ground integrity, cable strain relief, connector condition, and inspection of accessible low-voltage sections. High-voltage sections are inspected by trained personnel only.
- Performance verification. Energy or power measurement across the treatment range, pulse-repeatability spot checks, and calibration reference readings where the platform supports them.
- Documentation. A written PM report noting what was checked, what was found, what was corrected, and any recommended follow-up.
How often should a laser get PM?
The right cadence is driven by three things: platform, usage, and age. A high-volume aesthetic clinic running an IPL and a hair-removal platform six days a week is on a different schedule than a plastic-surgery practice using a CO2 resurfacing laser a few times a month.
As a general starting point:
- High-volume aesthetic use: quarterly PM is often appropriate, sometimes more frequently for older platforms.
- Moderate use: semi-annual is a common cadence.
- Occasional use / low-volume specialty: annual PM plus a check-in after any move or environment change.
Signs your equipment is overdue
- Increasing frequency of "clearable" errors that come back
- Longer warm-up or self-test times
- Perceived drop in treatment endpoints at the same settings
- Chiller sounds different — louder, cycling more often
- Handpiece or fiber warm where it wasn't before
- No PM in the last 12 months and no service log to show
Why documented PM matters even if nothing was wrong
A signed PM report is more than a receipt. It supports the equipment's value if you sell it, satisfies internal compliance reviews, and gives the next technician a baseline to work from. Practices with a clean PM history spend less on emergency service over the life of the machine — and get more for the equipment when they're done with it.
