Cynosure laser not firing: what to check

When a Cynosure system powers on but won't fire, the cause is usually an interlock, the footswitch or handpiece, cooling, or the high-voltage power supply. Start with the safe checks below before booking a repair.

Safe checks staff can do first

  • Confirm the door interlock and remote interlock plug are seated
  • Reseat the footswitch connector and try a spare footswitch if you have one
  • Check that the handpiece is fully connected and recognized on screen
  • Read the exact message or code on screen and write it down
  • Power down fully, wait a few minutes, and restart once

The faults behind most no-fire problems

  • Failed or intermittent footswitch or handpiece cable
  • Cooling not ready: low coolant, blocked filter or failing pump
  • Flashlamp at end of life or not triggering
  • High-voltage power supply or charging fault
  • Sensor or calibration fault that blocks firing for safety

When to stop and call

If the system still won't fire after a restart, or you see cooling, high-voltage or calibration messages, stop there. Opening the cabinet exposes high voltage. Call a technician with the model and the exact message — most no-fire problems can be narrowed down over the phone.

Common questions

Why won't my Cynosure Elite iQ fire?
The most common causes are an interlock or footswitch issue, cooling that isn't ready, an aging flashlamp, or a power supply charging fault. The on-screen message usually points to which one.
Can a bad footswitch stop a laser from firing?
Yes. A worn footswitch or damaged cable is one of the cheapest and most common no-fire causes. Trying a known-good footswitch is a good first check.
Do you repair Cynosure lasers on-site?
Yes. A1 Plus Laser Tech repairs Elite iQ, PicoSure, Apogee and other Cynosure systems on-site nationwide, with same-day or next-day service near San Diego. Call 586-224-4561, 24/7.
