Typical intervals for M22 IPL lamps, water filters, and coolant, plus the warning signs that mean it's time to service before the next scheduled visit.

The Lumenis M22 platform runs multiple modules — IPL, Nd:YAG, and others depending on configuration — off a shared cooling and power system, which means lamp life and filter condition affect more than one handpiece at once. As a general guideline, most high-volume practices see the best results checking lamp output and servicing filters and coolant every three to six months, adjusted for actual usage and local conditions.

IPL lamp life and output verification

IPL lamp life is generally tracked against pulse count relative to the manufacturer's rated life rather than a fixed calendar date. In practice, output should be verified against specification at every preventive maintenance visit regardless of pulse count, because lamps can degrade unevenly and a lamp well within its rated life can still under-deliver energy if cooling or connections aren't right.

Water filters and coolant

Water filters and coolant are the most cost-effective service item on this platform. As a general guideline, filters and coolant are commonly checked every three to six months, with more frequent service in dusty inland environments or high-treatment-volume practices. Cloudy, discolored, or low-level coolant, along with any flow or temperature alarm, are reasons to service sooner rather than wait for the scheduled interval.

These are typically service-level fixes — seals, connections, vacuum lines — rather than laser-source repairs, and they respond well to being caught during a scheduled PM visit rather than mid-treatment.

Contaminated coolant restricts flow, which can let components run outside their designed temperature window. Over time that accelerates wear on the optical engine and laser-head components — parts that cost meaningfully more than a filter and coolant service. The cost gap between routine maintenance and a major repair is one of the widest of any platform we service.
